A Rutherford County man who slowed down to drive through an icy area at an Interstate 85 exit was killed Friday morning in a crash with another vehicle, Belmont police said.

It was the second weather-related traffic fatality in the Charlotte area Friday. A Charlotte man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Eastway Drive.

The Gaston County crash took place about 9:30 a.m. on northbound I-85 at the Exit 27 ramp, police said. According to investigators, Gilbert Lazarus Carmona, 28, of Rutherfordton, was driving a pickup truck and prepared to exit I-85.

He slowed his vehicle as he prepared to drive across an icy area, but police say his truck was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer. Carmona died at the scene.

Belmont police say the investigation into the crash is continuing.
