Father who ran over toddler thought she was in backyard

The incident happened in the driveway of a home about 6 miles south of Waxhaw, near the North Carolina-South Carolina state line.

Authorities say a Union County father thought his 18-month-old daughter was playing behind the house when he backed out his vehicle and struck the child Monday.

The girl, suffering from serious head injuries, died a short time later at Carolinas Medical Center-Waxhaw, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

“This is a tragic accident,” sheriff’s Capt. Ronnie Whitaker said.

Authorities say the father thought his three children were playing in the backyard when he got into his Jeep and began backing out of the carport. But the 18-month-old was in the driveway.

The sheriff’s office said the name of the victim is not being released at this time, by request of the family.

The case remains under investigation. Steve Lyttle
