2 charged with Charlotte fitness center break-ins

The suspects targeted the fitness centers at apartment complexes to steal TV sets, according to police.

A tip from the public and alert work by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers led to the arrest of two men who are accused of breaking into fitness centers.

The suspects targeted the fitness centers at apartment complexes to steal TV sets, according to police.

Police identified the suspects as Brandon Jarrod Coxton, 23, and David Jordan Scales, 19.

Coxton and Scales were each charged with felony breaking and entering, conspiracy to commit breaking and entering, and larceny after breaking and entering. Cotton also was charged with driving while license revoked. Scales was also charged with possession of marijuana.

Police say they were called shortly before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday to the Whitehall Park Apartments Fitness Center, after someone reported a man looking in the window and trying to enter the building. Officers arrived at the scene and reported seeing a burgundy Ford Taurus drive away from the scene without the headlights on.

Police stopped the vehicle a short time later and questioned the occupants. Investigators said the two men, identified as Coxton and Scales, admitted to several fitness center break-ins.

Authorities say the investigation is continuing, and anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers, 704-334-1600.
