Detectives arrested three men Wednesday in connection with the Monday evening killing of a man in northeast Mecklenburg County – a shooting that police said stemmed from a drug deal.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the three have been charged in the death of Tony Van Tran, 26, who was shot about 6:30 p.m. in the 10600 block of Northgate Trail Drive, off Reedy Creek Road near Harrisburg Road and Interstate 485.

Charged in the case, according to police, were Jose Mannuel Sosa, Edwin Medel and Lindy Kompeak Hoeun.

Van Tran had been taken to Carolinas Medical Center-University but died shortly after he arrived. Police said another person, who was not identified, also was injured in the incident.

Investigators said Sosa, 20, was identified as a suspect in the case, and detectives found him early Wednesday in the 1000 block of Nations Ford Road. He was arrested without incident, according to police. Mendel, 21, and Hoeun, 22, also were identified as suspects and were arrested by detectives elsewhere Wednesday morning, police said.

Police said the three suspects and Van Tran knew one another and said the shooting took place during a drug transaction. Each suspect was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and two counts of armed robbery. Detectives said the investigation is continuing.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to contact detectives at 704-432-TIPS, or leave information with Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com.
