A 21-year-old man faces several charges in connection with an alleged police pursuit Wednesday morning in Mount Holly.

Cody Dillon Masten, of Mount Holly, was arrested Thursday morning, more than 24 hours after the pursuit.

Mount Holly police said an officer was called about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday about an assault on Beatty Drive. The victim told police he had been hit in the head several times by another man.

About the same time, the alleged assailant drove by, and police began a pursuit. Police said the suspect drove through a field at Catawba Heights Elementary School, striking a fence and then driving back on Ida Street.

Eventually, police said, the driver got onto northbound Interstate 85, turned around at the Lowell exit, and went southbound. The vehicle was found a short time later near Exit 27, police said, adding that the driver had fled.

Police said they determined the vehicle, a 1988 Chevrolet S-10 truck, had been stolen in Mount Holly. Detectives identified a suspect in the case and arrested Masten without incident Thursday.

Investigators said Masten is charged with felony speeding to elude arrest; larceny of a motor vehicle; damage to property; careless and reckless driving; and driving while license is revoked.

Police allege Masten did about $2,000 damage to the school fence.
