Iredell schools employee faces child sex charges

Jeff Speaks, 57, of Troutman, was arrested Monday and charged with 16 counts of indecent liberties with a child, the sheriff’s office said.

An Iredell County school employee was arrested Monday on 16 sex-related charges involving children, but authorities say the alleged crimes did not involve youths at the school where the man works.

Roger Jeffrey Speaks, who deputies say goes by the name “Jeff,” was arrested after a three-week investigation.

Investigators said a woman contacted detectives on Feb. 10, saying her daughters might have been the victims of sexual assaults. Sheriff’s Sgt. Amy Dyson interviewed the children on Feb. 20 and also contacted witnesses in the case, investigators said.

Dyson then interviewed Speaks, 57, of Troutman, on Monday, according to the sheriff’s office. Speaks was charged with 16 counts of indecent liberties with a child and was jailed under $200,000 bond, authorities said.

The sheriff’s office said Speaks is employed as a data controller at Troutman Middle School. Deputies said they took Speaks into custody Monday at the school without incident.

In a statement, Iredell County Sheriff’s Capt. Rick Eades said the investigation is continuing. But he added, “At this time, there is nothing which would leave the detectives to believe any crime occurred on any school property or involving any child at Troutman Middle School.”

Iredell-Statesville Schools officials were not available for comment on Speaks’ employment status with the system.
