The funeral for Jason Crisp, the U.S. Forest Service officer shot and killed with his service dog, Maros, in Burke County last week, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday in the McDowell High School gymnasium in Marion.

Authorities said the shooter, Troy David Whisnant, hid behind a tree and ambushed the officer and his dog. Whisnant shot himself in the head as other authorities confronted him, Burke County Sheriff Steve Whisenant said in an email update on the case Monday morning.

Authorities were conducting a manhunt for Whisnant, 38, who was suspected of killing his father and stepmother in their home.

When officers confronted Troy Whisnant, “shots were fired and Troy Whisnant shot himself in the head,” Whisenant said. “One of the officer’s rounds also struck Whisnant,” the sheriff said. “Further information will be provided pursuant to the SBI’s continuing investigation.”
