The newest four-legged member of the Gaston County police K-9 Unit is off to a big start, officials say.

Cena, a 16-month-old German shepherd, joined the unit March 3. Gaston County police officials said that in his first three weeks with the department, he has found a stolen gun and detected drugs several times during traffic stops.

Cena was purchased from Canine Extreme in Morriston, Fla., police officials said.

The German shepherd is paired with Officer R.L. Waldrop. Cena and Waldrop have completed a 240-hour in-house training program. Observer Staff Reports
