Gaston City Police took two people into custody Friday afternoon after being led on a vehicle chase that crossed state lines.
The pursuit started around 2:15 p.m. after a caller reported a careless and reckless driver in a white, Ford SUV, according to police.
The vehicle description matched one that police were looking for from earlier in the day in connection to a robbery of persons, officials said.
A Gaston County Sheriff’s deputy saw the SUV on Union Road/N.C.274 and tried to pull it over, police said, but the driver did not stop. Assisted by a Gaston City Police unit, officials notified York County law enforcement and pursued the SUV to the South Carolina state line.
A short time later, the SUV came back into Gaston County on N.C. 279, where police said they intercepted and again attempted to stop the vehicle.
Officers deployed spike strips and all four of the SUV’s tires were disabled, forcing the vehicle to stop shortly after, police said.
The female driver “appeared to be under the influence of something” and was taken to the hospital as a precaution, according to officials. The male passenger was uninjured and taken directly into custody.
Their names have not yet been released and charges are pending.
