One man was shot on a street in the Greenville neighborhood north of uptown Charlotte on Monday, and police were still trying to find a suspect by the evening.
Police identified the dead man as Alquez Lee Thompson, 20.
The shooting happened around 2:37 p.m. on Whisnant Street, just off Oaklawn Avenue less than a mile north of uptown.
Responding officers found Thompson lying in someone’s yard with an apparent gunshot wound. He died a few minutes later at the hospital.
Police said the shooting happened on Whisnant Street, but the crime scene extended to nearby Burton Street, where officers had marked shell casings that landed on the ground. The shooting was also a few steps from Greenville Park and Walter G. Byers Elementary School, which was briefly placed on lockdown after the shooting.
Police have not released many details about the suspect in the shooting. They’ve said the victim and the suspect knew each other and that the incident wasn’t a random act of violence.
They also mentioned that a car was involved, but it was unclear whether the shooting was a drive-by.
Police encouraged anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Tipsters are eligible for a reward for information that leads to an arrest.
