A Shelby man faces felony charges after he crashed his vehicle during a three-county police pursuit that ended in Polk County.

The suspect, identified by authorities as Jason William Lowery, 28, and a female passenger in his vehicle were injured in the crash.

The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office said undercover detectives attempted to buy methamphetamine from Lowery, but authorities said Lowery sped away when detectives tried to arrest him.

Detectives, joined by the N.C. Highway Patrol, pursued Lowery’s Honda along U.S. 74 through Cleveland, Rutherford and Polk counties.

Troopers said Lowery lost control of the car around mile marker 167, near Chimney Rock. The pursuit lasted about 45 miles.

Troopers said the Honda crashed into at least one other vehicle during the pursuit.

Lowery and the female passenger, whose name has not been released, were taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Investigators said Lowery was in stable condition Tuesday evening. The woman was in critical condition.

Investigators said doctors in Spartanburg discovered about 19 grams of meth hidden in a body cavity of the woman.

“Mr. Lowery apparently did not take his safety, the safety of his passenger, or the safety of the motoring public into consideration when he chose not to stop for law enforcement,” Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman said.

Lowery was charged with possession with intent to sell methamphetamine; sale or delivery of methamphetamine; felony speeding to elude police; and several other traffic offenses.

Authorities said additional charges are possible.
