A 66-year-old man was struck and killed Tuesday night while trying to cross five lanes of traffic on Idlewild Road in southeast Charlotte, police say.

Lal Mang was killed when he was struck by a vehicle shortly before 10:30 p.m. near Ware Road. Police said Mang was wearing dark clothing and was trying to cross the road in an area without a crosswalk or traffic signal.

Investigators said Mang was hit by a 2013 Honda Pilot driven by a 42-year-old woman heading outbound on Idlewild Road. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and called police.

Investigators said Mang is suspected of using alcohol but that the driver is not. The crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed. Steve Lyttle
