Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have identified a woman who was seriously injured in a hit and run Saturday in east Charlotte. Tonia Marie Payne, 43, was at Carolinas Medical Center. Police were looking for a suspect.
About 10:26 p.m. Saturday, Payne was crossing the 5200 block of Albemarle Road at North Sharon Amity Road, near Evergreen Nature Preserve. Payne was walking outside the crosswalk, police said.
She got halfway across the road when a white, older model Jeep Grand Cherokee struck her. Witnesses said the jeep was headed east on Albemarle Road. Police said the vehicle should have front-end damage.
Public records indicate that Payne’s last address was in Charlotte.
