A pedestrian who was in a Gastonia crosswalk when he was struck by an SUV on April 18 has died of his injuries, police said.
Police said they were notified Thursday night by the family of John Wayne King, 53, of Gastonia, that he died at Carolinas Medical Center.
Police said King was walking south in the crosswalk at East Long Avenue and Broad Street when he was struck by a white SUV and then by a small sedan, possibly a Toyota. He was struck at about 7:50 p.m. Both drivers left traveling east on East Long Avenue, police said.
Authorities said King was transported to Caramont Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He was later transferred to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition last weekend.
Police have received a number of tips from the community on possible suspects and vehicles, Gastonia police Sgt. K.C. McCabe said Thursday night.
“We appreciate all the help the community has provided to this point and hope the calls keep coming in so we can follow up on those leads,” McCabe said in a statement.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 704-842-5168, or leave a message with the Gastonia Police Department front desk staff at 704-866-6702.
