Pedestrian struck, seriously hurt on Central Avenue

A 59-year-old man was struck by two vehicles Tuesday night on Central Avenue, and police said the second driver didn’t stop.

Police are looking for one of two drivers who struck and seriously injured a man Tuesday night in east Charlotte.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Donnis Level Patterson, 59, was struck as he was crossing Central Avenue in the Eastland area about 9:30 p.m.

Investigators said Patterson was not in a crosswalk when he was hit by an outbound 2001 Ford Explorer driven by a 50-year-old woman. That driver stopped at the scene, police said.

But Patterson also was hit by a second vehicle, and that driver did not stop, police said. Investigators said the second vehicle was a small, dark-colored car. Police are looking at surveillance video in the area to help find that driver.

Patterson was taken by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center, where he is in critical condition.

Police said speed and alcohol use were not factors for the woman whose vehicle hit Patterson. They do not know if alcohol was a factor for the victim or for the hit-and-run driver.

Police ask that anyone with information in the case contact detectives at 704-432-2169 or leave the information with Crime Stoppers, 704-334-1600.
