A massive cooker at a food-processing plant sparked a fire that caused an unspecified amount of a damage in Gastonia on Sunday morning.

The fire was reported at 9:43 a.m. at a commercial building on York Highway owned by CBP Resources Inc. CBP Resources is listed in business directories as a sausage and poultry processor.

When firefighters entered the building Sunday morning, they encountered smoke near a 72-by-32-foot cooker that was in operation.

Firefighters said excessive heat had built up inside the cooker, causing a fire inside and igniting nearby duct work.

The firefighters opened the cooker’s hatch and extinguished the fire.

Thirty firefighters were on the scene of the fire for more than three hours. They also used 13 trucks as part of the operation.
