A Charlotte man has been charged in a head-on collision that killed a woman Wednesday morning in southwest Mecklenburg County.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Trungquan Le Tran, 23, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. The incident was reported shortly after 9 a.m. in the 10500 block of Steele Creek Road, between Brown Grier Road and Westinghouse Boulevard.
The identity of the victim, a 56-year-old woman, had not been released by police. They are working to contact her relatives.
Police said Tran was driving a 2009 Honda Accord southbound on Steele Creek when his car crossed a double-yellow line and struck a northbound 2013 Volkswagen Passat. Police said Tran fell asleep at the wheel shortly before crossing into the other lane.
The driver of the Volkswagen was pinned in the vehicle and freed by Charlotte firefighters.
She was taken by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center but died of her injuries shortly after 10:15 a.m., police said.
Tran was not injured, police said. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and police said excessive speed and alcohol use apparently were not factors.
The crash remains under investigation, police said, and anyone with information in the case is asked to contact detectives at 704-432-2169.
