An Albemarle man who authorities said hid in a teenage girl’s closet for five days and had sex with her was arrested Monday, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jarred Workman, 27, turned himself in to deputies in Statesville after being on the run for more than two weeks, authorities said.

Workman was charged with 11 counts of statutory rape and five counts of statutory sex offense. Investigators said the victim was 14.

The two met on the Internet, according to sheriff’s Lt. Bill Hamby. Authorities said the girl arranged to meet the man near her parents’ house in northern Iredell County in late April. Once they met, investigators said, the girl invited the man into the house.

Authorities allege that Workman lived in the closet from April 27 to May 2. On May 2, Hamby said, the girl’s mother discovered the man in the closet.

The suspect brushed past the mother and ran off – leaving his wallet and cellphone behind, authorities said. After interviewing the girl, deputies got warrants against Workman.
