Albemarle police have accused a tax preparer of pilfering money from her customers’ Internal Revenue Service refunds and say they are looking for more possible victims.
Leisha Kay Wallace, 44, was charged with identity theft, obtaining property by false pretense, and financial card theft.
Investigators said they believe she helped customers complete their tax returns and had the money sent to a prepaid debit card. However, police said, the debit cards were mailed to an address different from the customers’.
Wallace then took the money from the debit cards, according to investigators. Steve Lyttle
