A 3-year-old boy was fighting for his life Wednesday in a Charlotte hospital, and his mother and her boyfriend have been charged in what police say was a beating of the child.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the child suffered a severe head injury after being beaten with some type of object. He was in critical condition.
Officers were called about 3:45 a.m. Tuesday to the Charlotte Express Hotel, on Lucky Penny Drive in west Charlotte. That is off Freedom Drive near Interstate 85.
Police said the child was not responsive, and the youth was taken by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center. Investigators said they talked to medical personnel and determined that the child had been beaten and sexually abused.
The child’s mother, 23-year-old Shamika Reaves, and Reaves’ boyfriend, 32-year-old Corey McCree, were interviewed by detectives Tuesday and then charged with felony child abuse.
Later Tuesday, police said, detectives decided to charge McCree with first-degree sex offense and indecent liberties with a child.
McCree’s legal record shows two arrests on drug charges.
