A nine-hour standoff in Burke County ended late Tuesday night with the arrest of a suspect, the sheriff’s office says.

Randy Lee Bivens, 32, was taken into custody at his residence in the 1300 block of Icard Dairy Barn Road. That is just south of Interstate 40 in the Icard area of eastern Burke County.

The standoff began, authorities said, about 1:30 p.m. when deputies tried to serve a warrant against Bivens, who faced charges of assault by strangulation. Authorities said Bivens barricaded himself in his home and refused to come out.

Law enforcement presence increased throughout the afternoon and evening, and both a SWAT team and negotiators came to the scene. Authorities said they were unable to get Bivens to talk with them.

Around 10 p.m., deputies tossed tear gas into the residence, and they entered the home a short time later. Bivens was found in the kitchen and was either sleeping or unconscious, according to the sheriff’s office.

He was jailed under $62,500 bond and also was charged with assault by pointing a gun. In addition, he faces a number of traffic charges.
