More evidence found in fatal Lincolnton hit and run

New evidence has helped the N.C. Highway Patrol narrow down the type of vehicle involved in the fatal hit and run of a pedestrian near Lincolnton Wednesday night.

New evidence has helped the N.C. Highway Patrol narrow down the type of vehicle involved in the fatal hit and run of a pedestrian near Lincolnton Wednesday night.

The antennae from the vehicle of interest was found in the grass just beyond the scene of the investigation on U.S. 321 near Summerow Road, said Sgt. Kelly Stewart.

The antennae was found by the same person who initially called 911 after 53-year-old Sherry Kittle was hit around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Stewart said.

Troopers worked with Skeet’s Auto Body Repair & Wrecker Service in Conover to determine that the antennae, together with pieces of a broken right front headlight, are from one of three Chevy models from between 2001 and 2006.

Stewart said they’re looking for either a Suburban, Tahoe or Silverado, which would likely have windshield damage as well.

While officials are unsure of the vehicle’s color, he said, the antennae matches marks found on Kittle’s body.

Stewart said the driver may have left the scene because they thought they hit an animal; because they realized they had hit a person and were scared or because they didn’t believe officials would be able to find them.

“We’re encouraging them to come forward and tell us their side of the story,” he said.

“If someone doesn’t come forward, through process of elimination, we will continue to narrow our scope until we find the person responsible.”

The Highway Patrol has already begun working with its vehicle database using the new details and Stewart said there are 1,700 vehicles in Lincoln County that fit the criteria.

Officials do not believe this case is related to another hit and run fatality that happened on U.S. 321 in Caldwell County Thursday night.

Anyone with information should call the Highway Patrol at 828-466-5529.
