Two people were killed Wednesday in a single-vehicle wreck near Morganton, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Investigators have not identified the victims, but they said Wednesday afternoon that there are links to a missing elderly Caldwell County couple.
The wreckage of a pickup truck was spotted around midmorning along U.S. 64 near Propst Road, not far from Morganton’s southern edge. The vehicle apparently had fallen down an embankment about 50 feet below the road.
Crews were heading to the scene Wednesday afternoon to remove the bodies.
Authorities said the truck appeared to be similar to the one being driven by Creed William Goble, 76, of Hudson. He and his wife, Margie Carter Goble, 71, were reported missing earlier Wednesday by the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office.
In the missing person’s report, authorities said Goble was thought to be driving a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck. Reports from the scene said the vehicle that crashed was a pickup.
The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office canceled the alert for the Gobles a short time after the truck was discovered.
