Charlotte-Mecklenburg police focused attention Wednesday on their seat belt enforcement campaign by inviting the media to a 90-minute checkpoint in northeast Charlotte.
Police issued 64 seat belt violation citations during the program, which took place from 9-10:30 a.m. on Milton Road at the Plaza.
Law enforcement officials across the state are in the midst of a “Click It or Ticket” campaign. Rob Tufano, a spokesman for CMPD, said the department is trying to improve seat belt usage in Charlotte from 87 percent to more than 90 percent.
He said two recent seat belt checkpoints resulted in an average of 120 citations being issued.
The totals from Wednesday’s campaign:
Seat belt citations – 64
Child seat law violations – 9
Driving with license revoked – 6
No operator’s license – 8
Registration/inspection violations – 44
Other – 26
