A Catawba County man who police say shot an eight-year old during a fight with his ex-girlfriend last week died on Wednesday, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Christopher Shawn Davis, 27, died at Carolinas Medical Center around 5:30 p.m., Newton Police said.
He was suspected of shooting the 8-year-old boy in the hand on Friday.
Witnesses told officers that Davis had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend, who lives on Ervin Avenue in Newton. During the argument, Davis pulled out a pistol and began firing at his ex-girlfriend’s home, police say.
Police aren’t sure whether Davis was firing randomly or aiming for the house. The 8-year-old was standing at his bedroom window when he was shot.
Shortly afterward, Davis shot himself with the gun. Newton Police say Davis was a convicted felon, which meant it was illegal for him to possess a gun.
Officers said Davis couldn’t provide details of his intentions because he was unable to talk while in the hospital. They’ve pieced the events together from talking to family members and other witnesses.
The injured boy was treated at Catawba Valley Medical Center and released. The Department of Social Services is also conducting an investigation into the matter.
