Police in Salisbury are looking for a man who robbed a Walgreens store at gunpoint Sunday evening, touching off a brief police standoff.

The robbery was reported about 6:40 p.m. at the store in the 1500 block of East Innes Street, Salisbury police said.

Witnesses said the man entered the store through the front door and was carrying a shotgun. He went to the pharmacy, jumped over the counter, and held the pharmacist and an assistant at gunpoint. The man demanded pills, police said.

The first officers to arrive on the scene called for additional help because they believed the robbery suspect might be holding hostages inside. Officers then entered the building and got employees and customers out safely as they looked for the robber.

The suspect had fled, however. No injuries were reported, although one customer was treated at the scene for breathing problems, police said.

The suspect was described as a white male about 6 feet tall and 230 to 240 pounds. He was wearing camouflage pants, a long-sleeve gray shirt and a military-style hat.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Salisbury police at 704-638-5333 or Crime Stoppers at 866-639-5245. Steve Lyttle
