Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are looking for a gunman who traded shots Monday night with an officer on West Trade Street at Beatties Ford Road.
The police officer was not injured, and investigators say they believe the suspect also was not struck.
The shooting was reported shortly before 11 p.m. Police say they received a call from a person saying that a man had threatened him with a handgun near the Family Dollar store on West Trade Street. Responding officers spotted a man who fit the description of the suspect, investigators said.
Police said they approached the man, but he turned and ran. While running away, police said, the suspect fired several shots at officers. CMPD Officer Christopher Miranda returned fire, investigators said.
Officers tried to cordon off the area, and they called in the K-9 dog unit and a helicopter in an effort to find the man. But a search that lasted several hours failed to turn up a suspect. Police remained at the scene throughout the night, looking for clues.
Detectives finished their on-scene investigation and reopened West Trade Street about 6:15 a.m.
The suspect, identified by police as a light-skinned African-American man wearing a black T-shirt and black shorts, was last seen running down West Fifth Street toward Flint Street.
As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, Miranda has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
Anyone with information in the case is asked to call detectives at 704-432-TIPS. Or information can be left with Crime Stoppers, at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com.
