A 38-year-old Iredell County man has been charged in the death of a bicyclist who was killed in a hit-and-run collision Monday evening, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.
Troopers said Robert Harkey was charged with felony hit and run in connection with the incident, which took place about 5:30 p.m. on Barry Oak Road in southeast Iredell County.
Harkey lives about 1 1/2 miles from the scene of the collision.
The victim was identified Tuesday as Kyle Eller III, 53, of Statesville. According to several published and broadcast reports, Eller frequently rode his bicycle in the area of the collision.
Troopers said they received several 911 calls from motorists shortly after 5:30 p.m. Monday, advising them of the collision. Investigators determined that Eller probably had been struck by a large pickup truck.
Harkey was jailed in Iredell County under $75,000 bond, according to authorities.
