The woman who served as spokeswoman with the Iredell-Statesville Schools for nearly eight years was arrested Thursday in Statesville and charged with 21 felonies, police say.
Statesville police said Melissa Dawn Creason, 34, from the Rowan County town of Cleveland, turned herself in to authorities. She was charged with 16 counts of obtaining property by false pretense and five counts of embezzlement of state property by an official, according to authorities.
Police did not elaborate on the charges, but Creason was jailed under $30,000 bond and has an initial court date scheduled Monday. Jail records indicate Creason was freed on bond later Thursday.
Creason was suspended with pay by the school system in mid-April and resigned her position April 28. Police said they were contacted initially by officials with the school system. The SBI also was involved in the investigation.
Creason had been public information officer for the school system since 2006. According to public records, her annual salary was $71,332.
