The driver of a Piaggio scooter that crashed along Old Concord Road on Tuesday has been charged with driving while impaired.

Christopher Louis Raymond, 38, was traveling toward University City Boulevard when he ran off the right side of the road and crashed his scooter, police said. Raymond was thrown off the scooter and onto the ground.

Medic transported Raymond to Carolinas Medical Center with serious, life-threatening injuries. Raymond was charged at the hospital with DWI.

Raymond was wearing his helmet, and speed doesn’t appear to have been a factor, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Detective Kevin Allred said.

Witnesses are asked to call Allred at 704-432-2169. Anyone who saw the scooter traveling on Old Concord Road before the crash or knows about Raymond’s activities on Tuesday until the crash also is asked to call Allred.
