After Union County chase, suspect found hiding under a deck

The Union County Sheriff’s Office said Gabriel Martinez Castro, 21, of Monroe was arrested about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday and faces multiple charges.

A six-hour pursuit and manhunt ended Wednesday evening in western Union County with the arrest of a man accused of breaking into a house and stealing a vehicle.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office said Gabriel Martinez Castro, 21, of Monroe was arrested about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday and faces multiple charges.

Deputies were called to Wesley Chapel shortly before 1:30 p.m. to a suspected break-in at the 6100 block of Pumpernickel Lane, in the Price Mill subdivision. Authorities were also told that a resident’s vehicle was stolen.

About 20 minutes later, investigators said, a deputy spotted the stolen vehicle several miles from the home. The deputy said the driver of the vehicle failed to stop, and the deputy began pursuing it.

The pursuit ended when the driver crashed on Weddington Road (N.C. 84) near Underwood Road. The man then fled into the woods, touching off a manhunt.

With the help of the dog search unit, deputies said they finally found the suspect, later identified as Castro, hiding under the deck of a home on Plymouth Drive in Weddington.

According to Union County Jail records, Castro was charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen goods and several traffic violations.

The Sheriff’s Office said it got help during the search from police in Waxhaw, Monroe and Stallings, the N.C. Highway Patrol and the helicopters of WBTV and WSOC-TV.
