An autopsy is planned Monday to determine what happened to a guidance counselor found dead in her apartment in Newton.

Newton Police have identified the woman as Margaret “Maggie” Elizabeth Daniels. She was a guidance counselor at Discovery High School on North Ashe Avenue.

The case is being treated as a death investigation. Newton Police have requested help from the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation.

Newton police were called to the Windsor apartments at 9:07 Saturday morning in reference to damage to someone’s property. Neighbors alerted the officers to an unresponsive woman in apartment No. 21. When officers entered the apartment, they found Daniels dead.

A post on the school district’s athletics boosters Facebook page called Daniels “a mentor, friend, educator and coach to many in our community.”
