A Catawba County man was arrested early Saturday after investigators said he admitted to having a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said Darrick Wayne Fowler, 24, of Newton, was charged with statutory rape/sex offense of a 13-, 14- or 15-year-old by a defendant six years older, and with crime against nature.

Investigators said deputies were called at 4:30 a.m. Saturday about a suspicious vehicle that was parked behind the CVS pharmacy on Webb Road in Denver. Deputies said they found a partially clothed man and girl inside the car.

Deputies said the man, identified as Fowler, told them they were only sitting in the vehicle and talking. The female originally told deputies she was 19, but then admitted she was only 14, according to investigators. Both the man and the girl admitted to having a sexual encounter in the vehicle, authorities said.

Investigators said the girl was turned over to her mother. Fowler was jailed on a $125,000 bond.
