Police release surveillance photo in Newton homicide investigation

Surveillance video shows Maggie Daniels, a Newton counselor found dead June 28, leaving a Wal-Mart in Conover near her apartment.

Police released on Tuesday a surveillance video still of Maggie Daniels, the Newton counselor found dead in her apartment June 28.

The video shows Daniels, 31, leaving a Wal-Mart store in Conover on June 27. The store is about 4 miles north of Daniels’ Windsor Apartments home.

Newton police ask that anyone who saw Daniels at the Wal-Mart location to contact investigators at 828-465-7430.

Police still have not release cause of death or whether there are any suspects.

Daniels moved to North Carolina in 2005 just after graduating from Notre Dame College near Cleveland, where she is from.

In May 2013, Daniels received a master’s degree in counseling from Appalachian State University. She began counseling students at Discovery High School in Newton later that year.

A memorial for Daniels is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday at Lemon Gymnasium in Newton-Conover High School, where Daniels once coached basketball and taught English.
