Caldwell County investigators are asking for the public’s help with finding those involved in several cases of cows that have been shot, officials said Friday.
The sheriff’s office said someone appears to be targeting cattle after several shootings in the Petra Mill and Granite Falls areas have been reported.
The first report came in late May, but investigators said they couldn’t determine whether the animal had been shot intentionally.
In July, an owner in the Grace Chapel Road area reported finding a dead cow, officials said. However, the animal was decomposed to a point where officials said the cause of death couldn’t be determined.
In the Petra Mill Road area, detectives responded to another July report that five cows had been wounded: two had injuries through the leg above the hoof and at least two had wounds to the hip area, officials said. Another cow was missing and presumed dead.
The cows with hip wounds are not recovering and will have to be euthanized, officials said, noting one is a calf born this year.
The animals appear to have been shot with a small caliber rifle.
