A Rowan County middle school math teacher and Boy Scout leader has been accused of taking indecent liberties with preteens.

James Paul Barringer, 51, of Salisbury, is charged with six counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. Barringer was in the Rowan County jail under a $100,000 secured bond.

According to the China Grove Middle School’s website, Barringer taught eighth-grade math.

Investigators said the sexual activity took placed over a two-year period and involved multiple victims. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives have urged people who know of other potential victims to notify police.

The Rowan Sheriff’s Office began investigating Barringer on Sunday after receiving “a complaint concerning inappropriate sexual activity by a person that was employed as a teacher.”

Investigators encouraged anyone with information about Barringer or other potential victims to call Detective Sara Benfield at 704-216-8739 or Lt. Chad Moose at 704-216-8687.
