Two women and a child were killed Wednesday night in a head-on collision in Caldwell County, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the victims’ car crossed the center line, and they said speed appears to have been a factor in the crash.
The victims were identified by troopers as the driver, Sabrina Handy, 29; her grandmother, Carolyn Handy, 75; and Carson Handy, 4, Sabrina Handy’s son.
The collision was reported shortly before 6 p.m. in the 2800 block of Morganton Boulevard, which is N.C. 18. It happened near the Gamewell Fire Department station in the town of Gamewell, about 4 miles southwest of Lenoir.

Troopers said a Kia headed southwest went over the center line and crashed into a Lexus being driven northeast. Two women were in the Lexus.
Troopers said the Kia skidded off the road and down an embankment before coming to rest. The three people killed were all thrown from the vehicle. The women in the Lexus were injured and hospitalized but they are expected to survive.
The N.C. Highway Patrol said it is trying to determine why Handy might have been driving so fast.
