A passenger was killed and the driver injured overnight in southwest Charlotte in a single-vehicle wreck that police say might have been caused by alcohol and speed.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a 2007 BMW M6 slammed into a tree about 1:35 a.m. in the 13800 block of Brown-Grier Road. The wreck took place on a curve in the road, between Sandy Porter and Steele Creek roads, not far from Steele Creek Elementary School.
A resident heard the crash and called police. When officers and Medic arrived, they found the passenger, 43-year-old Christopher Gerard Turner, dead. The driver, 22-year-old Lola Viola Patrice Porter, suffered serious injuries and was taken by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center.
Police investigators said they determined that the driver was speeding and had been using alcohol. Police said Porter was charged with DWI and driving with a revoked license. They said additional charges are pending.
Brown-Grier Road was closed in the area overnight, but it was reopened about 6 a.m.
Police ask that anyone with information in the case contact detectives at 704-432-2169. Or information can be left with Crime Stoppers, 704-334-1600.
