Authorities in South Carolina say a woman who was reported missing after apparently driving 150 miles out of the way Sunday has been found in North Carolina and is OK.
A spokeswoman for the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday morning that Mary Eloise Capers, 74, of Hampton, S.C., was located Monday evening. She was found in North Carolina’s Cleveland County and has been reunited with her family.
Authorities said Capers recently was diagnosed with early stages of dementia.
The sheriff’s office in Hampton County said Capers left her home around noon Sunday for an 85-mile ride north to Columbia. But later that night, according to Iredell County authorities, Capers knocked on the door of a house near Statesville – about 150 miles from Columbia and 235 miles from her home – and asked for directions to Columbia.
Law enforcement officials across the Piedmont had put out an alert for the woman and the 2014 Toyota Corolla she was driving.
