Video shows vehicle suspected in Embassy Suites break-ins

Surveillance video from the Embassy Suites hotel on South Tryon Street where there were two car break-ins Saturday shows a vehicle suspected to be involved in the incidents, police say.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Lt. Mike Barron said police have identified a light-colored GMC Yukon, but they do not have any information about the driver or possible passengers.

A Greenville, S.C., family’s luggage and passports were stolen from their Chevrolet Suburban, which was parked on the top level of a garage behind Embassy Suites, about 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Without their passports, the family had to cancel their trip to Mexico.

A pickup truck was also broken into Saturday morning at the parking garage, but nothing was reported stolen.

The large number of hotels in the area, which is about 6 miles from Charlotte Douglas International Airport, presents challenges for police, Barron said.

“Our best success comes in working with the actual hotels,” Barron said, who added that things like good lighting, surveillance cameras and security guards can help combat car break-ins.

Barron said despite public perception, the area is safe.

“We do have property crime like this from time to time,” Barron said. “It’s not just isolated to hotels, it’s all over the city.”

Between January and June, there were 3,529 car break-ins in Charlotte, up 0.1 percent from the same time period last year, according to CMPD crime reports.

Crime maps show that there have been seven car break-ins since Feb. 1 within a one-mile radius of Embassy Suites.

Kevin Plucker, the Embassy Suites general manager, said the hotel works closely with CMPD and the community to keep customers safe. He said incidents like Saturday’s break-ins are rare for the hotel.
