A woman who told authorities she was living in a homeless shelter near Charlotte’s uptown has been accused of breaking into a vehicle in Lincoln County and using a credit card she took during the alleged crime.
Kathy Canipe, 52, was arrested by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday and charged with felony breaking and entering a motor vehicle and identity theft. She also was charged with two misdemeanors, authorities said.
Deputies accused Canipe of breaking into a vehicle Aug. 6 in the parking lot of Sabo Inc. Investigators alleged that Canipe took a credit card from the vehicle, which belonged to a Sabo employee.
According to authorities, Canipe used the credit card at a Rite Aid store in Gastonia, at a convenience store in Lincolnton and at an unknown Redbox location. Investigators said Canipe also filled out an application for a discount card at the Rite Aid store, and that application helped authorities identify the suspect.
Canipe was arrested by deputies Wednesday morning at a homeless shelter in the 900 block of North Tryon Street, where Canipe said she was living.
