Cleveland County authorities probe possible ‘mercy’ killing

The bodies of the couple were discovered Friday afternoon at their home in the 1600 block of Midway Avenue. That is west of N.C. 18, a few miles north of Shelby.

Cleveland County sheriff’s detectives are investigating the possibility that a man shot his wife to death and then took his own life Friday as part of a “mercy killing.”

The bodies of the couple were discovered Friday afternoon at their home in the 1600 block of Midway Avenue. That is west of N.C. 18, a few miles north of Shelby.

The Sheriff’s Office said a man called 911 and said he had taken his wife’s life. When deputies arrived, they found the woman dead of a gunshot wound, and they said the man had shot himself to death.

Investigators said they learned from family and friends that the wife had been suffering from a serious illness for a long time.

Authorities did not release the identity of the couple, but tax records and multiple media reports list the residents as Glenn E. and Linda Haynes.

The Sheriff’s Office said there is no history of calls from the residence, and they found no history of domestic violence between the couple.

Angie Michael, the couple’s daughter, told WSOC-TV that her mother was in a lot of pain. “She wanted peace,” Michael told WSOC. “She couldn’t do the things she used to do.”
