A teen driving a pickup truck hit a house and three vehicles overnight while fleeing from Lincoln County sheriff’s deputies, authorities say.
Investigators said they believe the driver of the truck was an 18-year-old and said the driver faces numerous charges in the case. No injuries were reported.
It began about 2:15 a.m., authorities said, after a report of an intoxicated driver on Business N.C. 16 in Denver. An officer driving southbound on the road spotted a truck fitting the description of the suspect, headed northbound.
The officer said he turned around and caught up with the truck at N.C. 16 and Harbor Master Court. Investigators said the truck tried to get away, running off the road several times and nearly striking a guard rail. The officer activated his blue lights and siren in an effort to warn other drivers, according to investigators.
Authorities said the suspect drove erratically before turning onto Cameron Heights Circle. According to authorities, the sheriff’s deputy slowed down, as is policy for the sheriff’s office, and the truck pulled away. A short time later, investigators said, the truck went off the right side of the road and drove through several yards before crashing into a large camper. The truck also damaged a house and two other vehicles, authorities said.
Two men in the truck jumped and ran, according to investigators. The 17-year-old passenger was caught and charged with two misdemeanors. The driver got away, but authorities said they found his personal information in the truck.
Authorities said the driver reached speeds of 70 to 80 mph during the incident.
