2nd person dies from head-on Monroe crash

Paul Randall, 64, of Marshville died Friday at Carolinas Medical Center, a police spokesman said.

Wednesday night’s head-on three-vehicle crash on U.S. 74 in Monroe has claimed a second victim, police say.

Paul Randall, 64, of Marshville died Friday at Carolinas Medical Center, a police spokesman said.

Randall was in a 2001 Volvo station wagon with 70-year-old Laral Leslie Callahan, also of Marshville, when their vehicle was hit head-on by a 2013 Dodge Ram truck driven by 53-year-old Jose Estevez Herrera of Reidsville, according to police. The wreck took place about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday near John Moore Road, on the west side of Monroe.

The N.C. Highway Patrol said Herrera’s truck crossed the median from the westbound lanes into the eastbound side of U.S. 74, hitting the Volvo. The impact of the crash forced the Volvo into an eastbound tractor-trailer. Callahan died at the scene.

Herrera was injured in the wreck but will recover, police said.

Monroe police said the initial investigation indicates that alcohol was involved. The police spokesman said evidence has been turned over to the Union County District Attorney’s Office for a decision on any possible charges.
