A 75-year-old Alexander County man reported missing Saturday after a fishing outing died in an apparent accident, authorities said Monday.
The body of Chang Va Lee, of Taylorsville, was discovered Monday morning by family members and searchers in the Catawba River near the N.C. 16 overpass. Lee’s pickup truck and canoe were found nearby Saturday.
The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office had issued an alert for the man Saturday afternoon, when family members reported him missing. He had left in the morning to go fishing on the Catawba River, just below the Oxford Dam.
The search continued overnight Saturday and Sunday after Lee’s boat and truck were found along the river. Around daybreak Monday, authorities said Lee’s body was spotted about 60 feet off the river bank.
Sheriff’s deputies said they believe Lee slipped and fell into the water. However, the investigation is continuing.
