The York County Sheriff’s Office says it has arrested a Charlotte man in connection with the home invasion and shooting that seriously injured a Vietnam veteran.

Ben Patrick Smith, 41, was arrested Tuesday by deputies and charged with attempted murder and burglary, according to a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

He is charged in the shooting of Wayne O’Neil Whiteside, 69. Deputies were called to his house on Gentry Lane, near Rock Hill, early Saturday. They found Whiteside had been shot.

Whiteside was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, but the sheriff’s office said Monday that the victim was alert and able to talk with detectives. Family members said Whiteside was a disabled Marine who had served two tours in Vietnam.

Smith has no record of recent arrests in Mecklenburg County, according to court records.

The sheriff’s office did not say whether Smith and Whiteside knew each other in any way.
