A two-car wreck on Rocky River Road in northeast Charlotte Tuesday morning seriously injured three people, officials said, including a 20-month-old girl.

The child and the 20-year-old woman who was driving the car, Dequira Kenyatta Fleming, were in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said. The driver of the other car, Michelle Marie Heffeman, 41, also was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital, police said.

At about 7:20 a.m., Fleming was driving west in the 3600 block of Rocky River Road when her 2002 Honda Accord crossed the double line and struck Heffeman’s 2007 Volkswagen Jetta head on, according to CMPD.

The child was in a child booster seat that was not appropriate for her age and weight, CMPD said. Fleming was not wearing a seat belt.

Heffeman was wearing a seat belt.

The accident happened near a curve between John Russell Road and Back Creek Church Road.

One person was pinned in the wreckage, and Charlotte fire officials said it took 21 firefighters more than a half-hour to free the person. Fleming was airlifted to the hospital and Medic took the two other victims by ambulance.

CMPD’s major crash investigations unit is investigating. Any witnesses are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or detectives at 704-336-3229.

The road around the accident was closed during rush hour, creating major traffic problems, but has since reopened. Staff writer Steve Lyttle and photographer Davie Hinshaw contributed.
