Family members of four children who police said were starved and abused in their northeast Charlotte home have established a website to help with the children’s medical bills.
The website launched Saturday and has raised $400 so far.
Earlier this month, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police charged the children’s mother, Ronika Bell, 28, and family member Deron Cuthbertson Jr., 33, with multiple counts of felony child abuse.
On Sept. 26, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office in Florida contacted CMPD’s Youth Crimes Unit in reference to the abuse of four children who’d been hospitalized in that area. Escambia County sheriff’s investigators determined the abuse happened in Charlotte.
Never miss a local story.
The 10-year-old girl and boys ages 9, 8 and 6 showed signs of malnutrition and physical abuse, police said.
Police said they determined that the children were living in a home with their mother and Cuthbertson when the abuse occurred and that Bell then left the children in Florida with a family member.
Bell and Cuthbertson were arrested without incident Nov. 7 in the 6000 block of Craftsbury Drive. Bell was jailed with bail set at $75,000 for each of four child abuse counts. Cuthbertson was jailed with bail set at $25,000 for each of four counts.
