A 22-year-old Wingate woman faces charges after a car-moped collision early Thursday that killed a woman south of Monroe, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Laina Davis was charged with felony death by vehicle in the collision, which took place shortly after 1 a.m. on U.S. 601 near Macedonia Church Road, about 3 miles south of the Monroe city limits.
Troopers said Davis was driving a car in the left northbound lane of U.S. 601, which in that area is a four-lane divided highway with a 55 mph speed limit. Investigators said Davis’ car struck the rear of the moped, which also was in the left lane.
The driver and passenger on the moped were thrown from the vehicle, according to troopers.
The passenger died at the scene. The driver was seriously injured. He was taken to CMC-Union Hospital and then transferred to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. WBTV, the Observer’s media partner, identified the deceased passenger as Waverly Staton Cash, 50, of Marshville; and the driver as James Brewer, 62, of Marshville.
Troopers said dense fog was reported in the area at the time.
The investigation is continuing, troopers said.
