Charlotte-Mecklenburg school buses are running this morning, but parents shouldn't panic.
The buses are making practice runs.
Never miss a local story.
Classes don't start in CMS until a week from today.
Instead, the bus runs are part of CMS' annual back-to-school preparations. Bus drivers are trying to learn their routes and the locations of their stops. The buses will be running from 6 to 9 a.m. each morning this week, and from 1:15 to 5 p.m. each afternoon.
The practices are on a staggered scheduled, so not all of the buses will be running each day. But the presence of buses on the roads should serve as a reminder to motorists that they will need to be much more careful on the streets next week. CMS buses carry 111,140 students and make about 37,000 stops.
School systems in surrounding North Carolina counties also begin classes next Monday.
